Questions to apply to my cover

What two conventions have I used and why?

I have used a celebrity for my front cover, as she gives inspirations to young readers. I also saw every big magazine company have a model or celebrity on. I have used bold text for excitement and colour these make the my celebrity stand out even more. I have used direct mode of address to make the readers feel that they can do and be what they want and get all the new classy clothes that my celebrity has. The direct mode of address allows the magazine to be inspirational because the text suggests to the reader its about lifestyle.

What are the effects of my layout, typography, colour choice and language choice?

The effects are that the reader will want to strive to be like my celebrity, and have every new item. The language and the bold text clearly stands out and shows the latest styles. The bright colour also attracts attention by seeing it from a long distance, this then lures the reader in and therefore seeing the celebrity. The celebrity status of Angelina Jolie draws attention to the peace, and makes people want to read about the bold text and flamboyant colours. My magazine is symmetrical this makes Angelina stand out even more because the is no distraction in the print. The text is serif matching Angelina then making the readers aspire to be like a celebrity. Small areas of advertisement draw other readers in even if they don't like the celebrity.

What issues of representation have i used?

I have presented the Angelina Jolie is classy and she is with the latest fashions, but she could just be wearing normal everyday clothes this then gives an idea to the readers that Angelina is always classy and is up with the fame tips. I also chose an old picture of her which may not look like her at all and is changed on Photoshop. The celebrity or model may not be doing the things the text said and this could be very misleading to the readers. These issues could be representing the celebrity wrong therefore the reader will not want to by the magazine and will think badly about the magazine

This is a really good start, with some sound analysis.

You must be specific in your answers and these answers must explain the effects on the audience.

You should talk about any issues that there are with the representation you have presented. Are all women/men like that? Do all teenage girls relate to those stories?

Colour Connotation

In this health & lifestyle magazine the red stands out the most as blood pumping around the body, as the magazine is about health. Red is also a very strong colour this then allows the white background to make this vibrant text stand out. There are also green text areas this could symbol nature and summer.

The magazine Gloria has focused the colour on green to show communication with there audience, and that this colour symbols love. The sudden collaboration of yellow stands out allot against white and green. This symbols fun and lightness as it brights up the magazine with a vibrant colour.

The Women's Health magazine has a white background to shows that the designer wants the text to stand out. The pink shows meditation and that this magazine is calm over all and is just informing the readers and not forcing them.
The light baby blue isnt very vibrant and doesnt catch the readers eye well but its suttle.

Symmetrical Magazines

Symmetrical (Formal)
This Pride magazine is symmetrical because the text is on either side, this then makes the model stand out and the image is then symmetrical. Her face is fixed in one position so that one side will not look different and that her face is completely symmetrical with only the text around her being different. I could argue this is radial symmetrical because the story is around her face and isnt over lapping.

Asymmetrical (informal balance)

The Rollingstone magazine is asymmetrical because the text is only on one side and Wiz Khalifas face is different, this makes the magazine informal. The designer made the face bigger and part of the text over lap his head, the magazine can only be symmetrical if there is text on the other side and his face was straight.

Asymmetrical balance by shape

This magazine is asymmetrical by shape because her body is at an angle and the her posture isnt straight so the picture will not be symmetrical.

Asymmetrical by position
In the sony magazine Will Smiths position is to the right this makes it asymmetrical by position because there is no line of symmetry. The image could be symmetrical but Will Smith's hand makes this Asymmetrical by position

Asymmetrical by texture
The image of Niki Minaj is Asymmetrical by texture because her leather dress is very detailed with shiny reflections and a detailed pattern on her belt. The textures on her face also catch's a reflection, Overall this makes Niki Minaj stand out

Asymmetrical by eye direction

This omyoga magazine is asymmetrical by eye direction because the women is looking at something but not the camera, this is showing that her yoga move needs concentration and not even a professional can do it without concentration. Its also asymmetrical by shape because her body position is pointing upwards and she has a curved body.

Radial by balance

This is radial by balance because the text around Daniel Craig in a circle shape, this makes it Radial also the text isnt going over all of his face.

5 Lifestyle Front Covers

Lifestyle Magazines

In this magazine the model is placed there to show that she is slim, and that you can be like her if you are slim. "Never Look Old!" meaning that once the target audience reads this part of the text stands out and makes them want to be slim. There is not much text as the designer wants the reader to look at the model, so that they can see what they can become. The language used is very persuasive and is making the audience believe they can be slim and healthy. The colour of the text relates to her dress, because it is a colour of passion and love. This dress then makes her look slim this then relates to the title and makes women feel like they should wear red

The magazine stands out because of the bright colours this then attracts the audience to read, the font is very big so it is easy to read. Rhianna slim so they put "8 Foods That Keep You Full (And Thin)" so that the target audience have someone to look up to, and that "Men Tell All The 1 thing he craves in bed tonight is.." so the audience will want to be thin and get "500 Fab Fall Outfits"."Could you be making more $$$" this then makes the audience want to know the secrets of making money and the colour catches there eye so  they can read on.

The magazine is aimed at women because of the background and what to wear next season, with baby pink colours and a celebrity with all the new looks. The magazine is saying Kim Kardashian is all loved up and this is because of her beauty and she is with the style. The language is telling the audience what to wear and the advertising makes the audience seem like Kim uses these brands. Kim stands out more then the text because of the layout it makes the audience think that she is wearing the brands and this makes people think that they will look good. Pink is the colour beauty and the audience will feel that Kim is pretty and will get new brands and her pink lip stick shows she has beauty

The mens health magazine has chosen David Beckham because of his muscles and he is not fat he is a perfect shape for a mens magazine. Young kids look up to him and the bright text really catches the eye of young ambitious football players. Older men will want to get muscles and they will easly be attracted by mens health magazine because they emphasize "ABS" and David Beckham shows that he is in shape this then leads the audience to read on.

This magazine is directed at men and the model with muscles is there to inspire young men to get muscles. The model behind him is telling the audience that you can get a girl with "Rock Hard Abs!" this catches the eye of most readers, because of the font and the bright colours. The language is telling you what you can do but it isn't saying you can do it. The text is surrounding the model because it all relates to him and the designers needs the audience to know that it is possible. All of the models on the mens health magazine are different, and the layout is different to reassure to the audience that its believable and then they would buy the magazine. Red can resemble toughness and men will want to read this because they think there tough and then want to know "100 SEXIEST THINGS IN HEALTH 2009".
